Ultherapy Zürich

What is Ultherapy®?

Ultherhapy® is a treatment for skin tightening using ultrasound energy. Heat is released into the collagen and boosts the elastin-forming layers of the skin to stimulate the skin's own regeneration process.

This is done by micro-injuries caused by heat in the underlying skin layer, so that it repairs itself again. The regeneration of collagen allows the skin to tighten from the inside-out.

The non-invasive procedure is particularly gentle without needles or surgery – it is done through lifting but without use of scalpel, general anaesthesia and downtime. From the outside, only the rejuvenation effect is visible: the skin is tightened, wrinkles and fine lines are smoother and contours are more defined.

Advantages of Ultherapy®

What are the advantages of Ultherapy®?

The following advantages are associated with Ultherapy®:

  1. Gentle lifting: The treatment uses an ultrasound probe to deliver targeted heat. Compared to other lifting methods, Ultherapy® is a treatment that requires neither surgical measures nor needles for injections or other purposes. Experience has shown that the treatment is well tolerated and has a targeted effect in the skin without damaging it. Accordingly, there is no downtime: the patient can resume to usual social activities after the session without any restrictions.
  2. Immediately, improved skin appearance with lasting effect: Immediately after the treatment, the skin is visibly firmer and smoother. As the heat works down to the collagen-forming layer of the skin, the skin regenerates itself in the following days and weeks. The skin rejuvenation process is thus underway immediately after the treatment, so that the skin's appearance will continue to improve over the following months.
  3. Applicable at any time of year: The treatment works in the underlying skin layer. The outer layer of skin is not damaged. The procedure therefore has a deep effect but without the risk of the skin becoming sensitive to the sun. This means that Ultherapy® can be carried out for all skin types, regardless of the degree of tanning, even in the summer months.
  4. Suitable as a long-term preventive method against the skin ageing process: In order to slow down natural skin ageing, Ultherapy® is recommended as a preventive measure. As a non-invasive method, the treatment is gentle and most side effects are temporary or mild and subside without prolonged effects.

Further advantages include:

  • No general anaesthesia, but light anaesthetic with local anaesthetic ointment
  • No incision and no scars
  • Good tolerance according to experience
  • Can be complemented with other methods such as mesotherapy, regenerative lifting treatment, botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid as filler

Who should not get a Ultherapy®?

The treatment is not recommended for those with:

  • Skin rashes, skin diseases (e.g., herpes, eczema, neurodermatitis) or irritated skin
  • Inflammatory acne
  • Patients undergoing treatment (e.g., Roaccutane, photosensitising drugs)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Who will benefit from Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is suitable for all skin types and is particularly recommended for patients who desire a gentle lifting method. The natural ageing process reduces, among other things, the volume in the face - e.g., in the area of the eyes and temples - and the contours change. Mature skin can benefit from a skin tightening effect and younger skin can preventively slow down the ageing process.

Ultherapy® is also aimed at patients who want a lifting method that allows them to resume everyday activities immediately after treatment or who cannot afford any downtime.

Yes. Ultherapy® can be performed on both men and women.

Before the treatment, a consultation is held and your skin is analysed for current irritations. You inform us if you are ill or if you are undergoing treatment and taking medication.

For lasting results, Ultherapy® can be combined with mesotherapy, regenerative lifting treatments or fillers, depending on your needs.

The treatment is not suitable for those with irritations, skin rashes, skin allergies or damaged skin. Also, easily irritable skin or the intake of certain, photosensitising medicines as well as internal diseases exclude the application.

The treatment is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What areas can be treated with Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® can be applied to the face, neck and décolleté as well as the body. Individual areas of the face can be treated in isolation. These include the temple and eyebrows, zygomatic arch, cheek and lower jaw contour.

When you come to our practice for your treatment, we can discuss the possible areas that could benefit from this procedure. We offer free consultations so you can learn more about your options before deciding if Ultherapy® treatment is right for you.

Procedure: How does a Ultherapy® treatment proceed?

1. Preliminary discussion /consultation:

At the beginning of the first session, our expert will have a consultation with you. This will determine your desired result and treatment area, as well as whether Ultherapy® is suitable for you. We inform you about possible risks and the realistic results to be expected. Subsequently, we agree on the type and duration of the therapy before starting in order to achieve optimal results.

2. Before the treatment:

After the consultation, the session is started. According to the preliminary consultation, the area to be treated - face (area), neck and/or décolleté, body area - is cleaned and marked. If desired, an anaesthetic ointment is applied. Subsequently, an ultrasound gel is applied.

3. During treatment:

A smooth ultrasound head is gently guided over the skin area to be treated according to a defined pattern. The respective zone is visible and tracked on the monitor via real-time visualisation. Based on the image, the treatment area is treated with micro-focused ultrasound energy. This technology enables the targeted delivery of ultrasound pulses while controlling the zone and depth with precision. The delivered pulses penetrate into the tissue layer to stimulate collagen formation. After the treatment area has been treated with ultrasound energy, a mask is applied.

4. After the treatment:

After the treatment, the skin gets an even complexion and looks smoother and fresher. The lifting effect is immediately noticeable. You can also apply make-up as desired and go about your preferred activities.

If you experience any prolonged side effects or other discomfort after the treatment, you can contact us at any time. We are here for you.

What to expect with Ultherapy®?

The success of the treatment depends on how firm the patient's tissue is and how often the treatment is performed. The first lifting effect is visible immediately after the treatment, the long-term success is shown in our experience to be after a period of 3 to 6 months.

Ultherapy® causes new collagen to be formed, which breaks down the natural ageing process. It is to be expected that the therapy slows down this process. To refresh the skin tightening effect, we recommend repeating Ultherapy® once a year.

How does a Ultherapy® work?

Ultherapy® uses ultrasound energy to treat the area of skin. This energy is micro-focused and passes through the skin tissue without damaging the skin surface.

The skin reacts to the micro-injuries and regenerates itself - namely through the formation of the body's own collagen and elastin. The skin is stimulated during the treatment and is already noticeably firmer afterwards. The lifting effect continues over the next few months and results in a smoother, fresher appearance.

How does Ultherapy® feel and is it painful?

Before an Ultherapy® treatment, an anaesthetic ointment is applied to the area of skin to be treated at the patient's request. During the treatment, a heat development is noticeable at this area, as it is specifically treated by ultrasound. Experience has shown that the treatment is well tolerated. Afterwards, the skin may be slightly reddened and sensitive to pressure.

What are the possible risks and side effects of Ultherapy®?

After the treatment, there may be slight redness and swelling, as well as temporary skin prickling. The treatment area may be sensitive to pressure for up to two weeks. Experience shows that these side effects are mild after Ultherapy® treatment and subside quickly. In rare cases, haematoma may also occur.

We will be happy to advise you before your treatment about potential risks and whether Ultherapy® is suitable for you and your desired goals.

How long does the recovery take?

Ultherapy® requires no downtime. The skin is already visibly firmer and smoother after the treatment.

Can I do sports after the Ultherapy®?

Yes. You can resume your normal activities as usual after Ultherapy®.

How long is the skin sensitive after Ultherapy® treatment?

The skin is injured by the treatment in the deeper layers of the skin by micro focused heat radiation but shifts into the process of regeneration after the treatment. The tissue starts to work, which can feel like a slight muscle ache. Another Ultherapy® treatment should be carried out after two weeks at the earliest.

How long does it take to see results with the Ultherapy®?

Immediately after the treatment you will have noticeably firmer skin - balanced and with better blood circulation. Even though the results are visible directly after the treatment, further regeneration of the skin is ongoing.

We recommend 1-2 treatments to achieve the best results within 6 months. For long-term results, we recommend repeating the treatment once a year.

Feel free to book a free consultation appointment so that we can discuss how many treatments you need to achieve your desired results. This will also allow us to estimate when you are likely to achieve your desired result.

Can I enhance the Ultherapy® results with additional treatments?

Yes. You can optimise the lifting effect with mesotherapy, regenerative lifting treatment, botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid as a filler.

We will be happy to advise you which methods in which combination are an optimal complement for your desired goals.

How long do the results of Ultherapy® last?

The results slow down the natural ageing process of the skin and strengthen the tissue. How long the results last, depends specifically on the starting position of the treatment area and the firmness of the tissue.

How many sessions are needed?

Depending on the treatment goal, 2 to 4 initial treatments are recommended. The treatment success is very individual and depends on the respective skin texture and the desired result. For a long-term result, we recommend repeating the treatment once a year.

We offer free consultations and are happy to talk to you about whether a Ultherapy® is right for you and approximately how many treatments are necessary for your goal.

How long does a Ultherapy® treatment last?

As a rule, the treatment lasts 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the treatment zone.

What makes Ultherapy® different from other methods? What makes the procedure unique?

Ultherapy® is much gentler and better tolerated than invasive procedures. For example, a classic facelift requires surgery and a general anaesthetic. Ultherapy® treats the deeper layer of skin without damaging the surface of the skin and still works up to a layer of tissue that is tightened in a typical surgical facelift. An ointment is applied to the area to be treated to numb the area. Afterwards, the patient is immediately comfortable in their social environment and does not need a long healing period.

Laser therapy and treatments with radiofrequency devices pass heat from the uppermost to the deeper layers of the skin. This damages the surface of the skin and makes it sensitive to sunlight. Also, depending on the treatment, a certain healing time is required. For skin irritations, acne and pigmentation disorders, these treatments can be very helpful. For targeted skin tightening, on the other hand, Ultherapy® is much gentler with regard to the skin surface and works from the inside out.

Other methods can optimise the result depending on the objective, such as mesotherapy, regenerative lifting treatment, botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid as a filler.

Other advantages over alternative methods:

  • No downtime
  • No surgery required
  • Good tolerance; gentle on the surface of the skin
  • Suitable for all skin types and can be used in the summer

When and how was Ultherapy® discovered?

The Ultherapy® system has been approved by the FDA since 2009 - at that time utilised as a non-invasive procedure for eyebrow lifting. In the following years, the system received approval as a lifting method for the entire face, submental region and neck. Today, Ultherapy® is offered in over 50 countries.

According to the expert panel of doctors (documented in scientific paper in May 2019 by Fabi et. al), Ultherapy® is the gold standard for non-surgical skin tightening. The real-time visualisation is a special feature that allows the exact treatment of the different treatment areas in order to achieve optimal results.
