In breast augmentation, silicone implants are used to increase the volume of the breasts or change their shape. The aim is a breast that suits your body proportions and looks natural. Surgery is carried out under the direction of Dr. med. (I) Ranieri Mazzei, FMH specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
Many women would like more volume, a more symmetrical shape or to restore their breasts after pregnancy, weight loss or natural changes. During the consultation, we discuss implant selection, incision, anaesthesia, recovery and possible risks.
Surgical Procedure
This treatment is a surgical procedure performed under medical direction. Procedure, anaesthesia and aftercare are discussed in detail during your personal consultation.

Treatment Areas
Breast augmentation may be considered for a range of concerns.
More Volume
If you are unhappy with the size of your breasts, an implant can increase their volume. The size is chosen to suit your proportions, tissue and goals.
Shape and Symmetry
The procedure can also be used to change the shape of the breasts or achieve a more symmetrical shape. We discuss beforehand what your starting point allows.
Restoring Volume
After pregnancy or weight loss, or through natural changes, the breasts can lose volume. An implant can help to restore this volume.
What is breast augmentation?
In breast augmentation, a silicone implant is inserted through an incision. The size, model and shape of the implant are chosen individually based on your body proportions, tissue and aesthetic goals, with different options discussed.
The implant can be placed either above or below the chest muscle. The choice of position depends on your anatomy and the aesthetic outcome you would like.
The most common incision sites are in the fold beneath the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit. Scars are positioned as discreetly as possible and usually fade over time. Depending on the case, surgery takes place on an outpatient basis or with a short inpatient stay.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the procedure work and how long does it take?
The implant is inserted through an incision in the fold beneath the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit and placed above or below the chest muscle. The procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Depending on the case, it is performed as an outpatient procedure or with a short inpatient stay.
What type of anaesthesia is used for the procedure?
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia. It is given in a controlled setting under the care of experienced specialists in anaesthesiology. We explain how to prepare for the anaesthetic during the consultation.
What risks and side effects are possible?
Possible risks include infection, capsular contracture around the implant and temporary changes in sensation. Swelling and a feeling of tightness are normal in the first period afterwards and then subside. Before surgery, Dr. med. (I) Ranieri Mazzei discusses with you in detail which risks are relevant to your situation and whether the procedure is suitable for you.
What should I consider before the procedure?
Avoid blood-thinning painkillers such as aspirin for 14 days before surgery and avoid nicotine for 6–8 weeks beforehand. Tell your doctor about all medications, allergies and relevant medical conditions. You receive individual instructions on fasting and anaesthesia in good time before your appointment.
What should I consider after the procedure?
After the operation, you wear a special support bra, and regular check-ups accompany the healing process. Light activity is possible after approximately two weeks, while intensive exercise should be avoided for around six to eight weeks. MRI scans and mammograms remain possible with implants; please inform the radiology team about your implant in advance.
How long does recovery take after the procedure?
Patients can return to normal life after a few days, with restrictions. Swelling and a feeling of tightness are part of the early healing phase and subside over time. For the recovery period, you receive clear instructions from us and know whom to contact with any questions.

When do results become visible?
An initial result is visible immediately after surgery. The final breast shape becomes apparent after 3–6 months, once the swelling has subsided. The aim of the procedure is breasts that look and feel natural.
How long do the results last?
Breast implants are long-lasting and do not need to be replaced routinely. They are exchanged if you would like a change or if there is a medical indication. If needed, we discuss a possible future exchange with you.
Is more than one procedure needed?
Breast augmentation is planned as a single procedure, as implants do not need to be exchanged at regular intervals. A further procedure may be considered if you later want a different size or shape or if there are medical reasons for it.
Who is the procedure suitable for?
Breast augmentation may be an option for women who are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. The same applies if you would like to restore volume after physical changes such as pregnancy or weight loss. We assess whether the procedure is right for you during the consultation, based on your anatomy and goals.
How much does the procedure cost?
The cost depends on the type of implant, the extent of the operation and your individual circumstances, which is why the price is available on request. After the consultation, you receive a transparent breakdown. As an aesthetic procedure, breast augmentation is usually paid for privately; in medically justified cases, we discuss the options individually.
