What is LED phototherapy?
LED phototherapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses different coloured LED light to target the skin. The technology is based on the principle of photobiomodulation – a scientifically proven process in which light waves of specific wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin layers and activate cellular processes there.
At Aesthetics Medical in Zurich, we use the Healite II system, one of the most advanced LED phototherapy devices on the market. Unlike conventional laser therapies or solariums, the skin is not heated, which completely eliminates skin damage, pain or irritation. The treatment is therefore one of the gentlest and safest methods for all skin types.
Effectiveness according to light colour:
Yellow light penetrates the skin with a wavelength that is particularly effective in relieving inflammation and accelerating wound healing. It has a soothing effect on irritated skin, reduces redness and is particularly effective for active acne. It also stimulates lymphatic drainage and supports the removal of metabolic waste products.
Red light has the longest wavelength and penetrates deepest into the skin. It activates fibroblasts – the cells responsible for the production of collagen and elastin. This leads to firmer, more elastic skin and visibly reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing. At the same time, red light promotes blood circulation and can stimulate hair follicles on the scalp.
The positive effects of LED phototherapy have been confirmed in numerous scientific studies. The treatment is ideal as a stand-alone therapy or as a complementary measure after other aesthetic treatments such as peels or microneedling. LED phototherapy is also particularly popular as a quick skin refresh before important events – for an instant glow effect.
Quick facts about LED phototherapy
Why choose LED phototherapy at Aesthetics Medical?
LED phototherapy procedure
1. Consultation and skin analysis
First, we analyse your skin type, skin condition and individual concerns. Together, we determine which light colour and treatment plan are best suited to your needs. We also discuss the expected results and the recommended number of treatments.
2. Preparation
Depending on the treatment area, you will assume a semi-seated or lying position. If necessary, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed to remove any make-up residue, dirt or sebum. This ensures that the light can penetrate the skin optimally. In certain cases, your eyes will be covered with special protective goggles.
3. LED light treatment
The Healite II device is positioned at the optimal distance above your skin. The LED light rays now begin to penetrate deep into your skin layers and activate cellular processes there. All you feel is a gentle, pleasant light on your skin – without any heat, tingling or burning. The treatment is completely relaxing and painless.
4. Debriefing and care recommendations
After the treatment, we will discuss the most important care instructions with you. Consistent sun protection with SPF 50+ is particularly important in the first week after treatment. You can resume your normal activities immediately – there is no downtime.
5. Follow-up appointments (optional)
For optimal and long-lasting results, we generally recommend a series of 4-6 treatments at four-week intervals. For acute skin problems such as acne, a shorter treatment interval may be advisable initially.
