What is hyperhidrosis treatment?

Hyperhidrosis refers to a malfunction of the sweat glands, in which sweat production far exceeds the amount necessary for heat regulation. While sweating is a natural and vital process for cooling the body, people with hyperhidrosis produce excessive amounts of sweat – regardless of temperature or physical activity.

The hyperhidrosis treatment at Aesthetics Medical in Zurich is based on a proven injection therapy with a special active ingredient that specifically interrupts the communication between nerve cells and sweat glands. The active ingredient inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates the sweat glands to become active. This significantly reduces sweat production in the treated areas without affecting the natural heat regulation of the entire body.

The treatment is considered one of the most effective and safest methods for treating excessive sweating. It has been used successfully in aesthetic medicine for years and offers those affected a lasting improvement in their quality of life. Unlike antiperspirants or other topical treatments, the injection acts directly on the cause and offers a long-lasting solution for several months.

The method has proven particularly effective for axillary hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating), but it also shows excellent results for excessive sweating on the hands and feet. The treatment is minimally invasive, performed on an outpatient basis and allows patients to return to their daily routine immediately.

Hyperhidrosis treatment procedure

1. Initial consultation and medical history

During a personal consultation with our specialist, we will analyse the extent of your hyperhidrosis and discuss your expectations. We will provide you with comprehensive information about the treatment method, the expected results and possible side effects. We will also check for any possible contraindications, such as the use of blood thinners or certain antibiotics.

2. Preparation

The skin area to be treated is thoroughly disinfected. If necessary, an anaesthetic cream can be applied to make the treatment even more comfortable.

3. Injection treatment

The specialised active ingredient is injected into the affected areas using particularly thin needles. The injections are made at intervals of a few millimetres to achieve an even effect. For the armpits, around 15-20 injection points are made on each side, with more for the hands and feet. The treatment is only minimally noticeable.

4. Follow-up

After the treatment, you will receive detailed recommendations on how to behave for the next 24 hours. You should refrain from sports and strenuous physical activity on the day of treatment. Otherwise, you can resume your normal activities immediately.

5. Follow-up check (optional)

After 2-4 weeks, we offer an optional follow-up examination to check the success of the treatment and to administer follow-up injections if necessary.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

The effect usually sets in after 2–7 days. Most patients notice the maximum effect after 1–2 weeks. In rare cases, it may take a little longer for the full effect to be achieved.

The treatment causes only minimal discomfort. We use particularly thin needles, so the injections are barely noticeable. If necessary, we can apply an anaesthetic cream beforehand to make the treatment even more comfortable.

The effect lasts for an average of 4-6 months. The exact duration can vary from person to person and depends on various factors such as metabolism, sweat gland activity and the area treated. If the effect wears off, the treatment can be repeated without any problems.

Hyperhidrosis treatment is particularly suitable for the underarms, hands and feet – the three most common problem areas. For other areas of the body, we will be happy to advise you individually on alternative treatment options.

No, you can resume your normal daily routine immediately after treatment. We only recommend that you refrain from sports and intense physical activity on the day of treatment. You will be socially presentable immediately.

Blood thinners such as aspirin, vitamin E supplements or omega-3 fatty acids increase the risk of bruising at the injection sites. Ideally, these should be discontinued a few days before treatment. Please discuss this with your doctor in advance.

No. The treated areas only make up a small part of the total body surface area. Your body can still regulate its temperature normally. Sweating in other, untreated areas remains unchanged.

The most common side effects are slight redness, swelling or small bruises at the injection sites, which subside on their own after a few days. Serious complications are extremely rare when performed correctly.

Yes, hyperhidrosis treatment can generally be combined well with other aesthetic treatments. Please discuss your requirements with us – we will be happy to advise you on suitable combination options.

As a rule, this is a self-pay service. In individual cases where there is proven medical necessity, the costs may be covered by your health insurance provider upon application. We will be happy to assist you in preparing the necessary documentation.

In most cases, a single treatment is sufficient for an effect lasting 4-6 months. The treatment can then be repeated if necessary. Over time, some patients report a longer duration of effect with repeat treatments.

Other treatment options include antiperspirants, iontophoresis, systemic medication or, in severe cases, surgical procedures. However, injection therapy is considered to be particularly effective, minimally invasive and with few side effects. We would be happy to advise you on all available options.
